For this week’s blog, I decided check out MySpace. I will admit that I never deleted my MySpace account after high school. I don’t use it anymore, but I was glad that I didn’t have to create a new profile for the purposes of this assignment. It was interesting to note that most of my friends have deleted their profiles. Those people who kept their account had clearly not logged in very often. Their pages were like time capsules. People and pictures on their pages were reminiscent of the way things were years ago. In many cases, I knew that certain friendships had dissolved and people had changed, but their pages had not. I must admit I’m guilty of this too. My profile picture hasn’t changed in 5 years!
MySpace still has the “top friends” function so I checked out the pages of all of my “top friends”. As I was checking out pages, other “top friends” are visible to anyone who looks at the page. This allowed me to navigate to profiles of people that did not occur to me originally. I recognized a lot of people and tried to view their profiles, but privacy settings prevented me. I kept trying to find old friends, but it was clear that many had switched from MySpace to Facebook.
It is obvious that MySpace has attempted to stay current by adding many of the features people like about Facebook, for example news feeds and status updates. However, MySpace has a lot that Facebook doesn’t. It allows you to put a background on your page. You can have a song play when your friends are on your page. There are virtual pets and surveys and the pages are far more personalized.
The bottom line is that I won’t be returning to MySpace any time soon. It was nice to be reminded of the past, but I think I’ll be deleting my MySpace page after this experience.
