Hulu vs. YouTube
This may be kind of hard to believe, but until this assignment, I had never used Hulu... so not surprisingly, I was much more familiar with YouTube. Since I've been in college, I've really fallen behind on TV shows, but I decided to check out a recent episode of The Office. I had a good experience on Hulu. The short ads aren't very annoying - they are still far shorter than television commercials, and it was nice to watch a television program at my own convenience. While Hulu doesn't have every TV show available on their website, they do have a lot, and they all stream at fairly high quality, which is always nice. While I am not a YouTube junkie, I have watched my fair share of YouTube clips... I've seen "Teach Me How to Bucky" and embarrassing number of times. While both sites contain online video content, the two sites serve very different purposes. Hulu streams content that is created and distributed by major network corporations, whereas YouTube is mainly for people who do not have access to major media outlets. YouTube is full of clips created by people who do not work in the media industry, and almost all clips on YouTube are shorter than ten minutes. YouTube tends to be something you share and discuss with your friends, but Hulu is more for personal entertainment. I will probably continue to use YouTube more than I use Hulu, but I would revisit Hulu to catch up on some television shows when I can find the time!
