Since I devoted most of my last practicum post to Digg, I decided that today's post would talk more heavily about the other social bookmarking site I chose to use, Delicious. Unlike Digg, which I had encountered previously, I had never even heard of Delicious. Nevertheless, I was excited to get started on the site. After spending some time on it, I have to say that I've been a little disappointed. I was expecting it to be like Digg, which I had primarily used to find new sites, rather than bookmark ones I've already found. I found Delicious to be a lot harder to use in that sense, for a number of reasons. First, I think that the way Digg uses a select amount of tags makes it easier to search. On Delicious, you can enter your own tag, which makes it a little bit difficult to find things. Also, Delicious doesn't show a picture next to the bookmarked items, nor does it show the source of the links. It also looks a bit shabbier than Digg, which sometimes makes me nervous that I'm going to click on a virus (I mean, come on, you mean to tell me that "How Much Famous Rappers They Pay for Insurance Car" isn't sketchy?)
What I do think that Delicious is useful for is bookmarking sites themselves. I was given the option to add a "Bookmark on Delicious" button to my toolbar. This makes it just about as easy to bookmark a page on Delicious as it does to add it to the bookmarks on my computer, which is extraordinarily convenient. I'd have to say that I definitely use Delicious for actually saving sites and I use Digg as a means to browse the Internet and see what other people are up to, so I see how both are definitely valuable.
