Practicum 4, Questions- Brooke

Here are my discussion questions for my presentation of Kongregate.

•Before this week’s blog, how many of you had played some sort of online video game?

• Why would someone take the time to play these games?

• Why wouldn’t someone take the time?

• Do you think that something like Kongregate is a more or less user friendly environment than a gaming console or a game such as Aris?

• Does anyone think that they would be interested in joining Kongregate? Why or why not?

• What do you think the possible differences between a membership site like Kongregate and a nonmembership site like PopCap Games are? Why might it matter to be a member?

  1. Does tetris count as an online game? That's pretty much my only experience. I tried Farmville for like a week, but I didn't enjoy it. I think one obvious reason someone might play these games is because they're trying to procrastinate. However not everyone who plays games is in school. They're a great way to occupy time and be mindless. Sometimes it is great to have an activity to take up time that doesn't involve thinking. The games are somewhat addicting and take time to get to higher levels. I think this is both a positive and negative factor for some people. People who don't have time or interest in gaming would probably avoid online games. I'm not familiar with Kongregate so I won't answer the second half of these right now!

  2. i agree with Tom. I tried farmville, but did not like it at all (so many people were playing it, i decided to try it out but did not enjoy it). People play these online games as time wasters, I think. Like we talked about today in lecture, so many new games are being developed that are ridiculously simple, but those can be the most addictive of any game. I did not really think about that fact until today in lecture. Additionally, I agree with Tom that people always want to advance to the highest level possible. Having these simple, easy-to-learn games are even more addictive because people can master (or think they have mastered) them quickly, thus their confidence goes up and they play the game even more in an effort to reach the highest level possible. So, to conclude, why do people play these games? Yes, time wasting and mindless activity, but the ease of all these new games being developed may have something to do with it.
