I track Twitter stats for our main UW athletic department page (@uwbadgersdotcom) every week. Not surprisingly, the page gets more activity when our teams are having success. We are also in arguably the busiest time of the year for UW athletics, with fall sports wrapping up and winter sports getting going. So, the combination of success and lots of action at the Kohl Center, Camp Randall, the UW Fieldhouse, and McClimon Soccer Complex, Twitter sees much more action. This past week, our main Twitter page saw a new high (in the past 6 months) with 32 @ mentions over one week. An @ mention is basically when someone includes your name in their tweet -- this then shows up on your wall and gives a measure of popularity. It shows that people are seeing our tweets and that they feel we are active enough on Twitter that they should include our name in their message. All in all, it shows us that people are seeing our presence on Twitter. 32 was a new high for our page. The success of our football team and the beginning of men's and women's basketball season no doubt had an impact on this number. It is very encouraging to see our fans getting involved and following our tweets. That is our goal, after all, to attract new fans and provide them with information they may not otherwise see. So, 32 @ mentions is a new high, but I'm hoping to see even more next week after some more Ws from Badger teams this weekend!
Finally, in other pressing Twitter news, Tiger Woods has officially joined Twitter (as of today). @TigerWoods. And please, keep your jokes to yourself. Ha.
Other than that, remember to follow @uwbadgersdotcom and come out to the Kohl Center this weekend for men's hockey or the UW Fieldhouse for volleyball. Both teams play Friday and Saturday night! On Wisconsin!
