Practicum

It's been too long since I posted about my practicum project. Since my last post, I have continued to use Twitter to connect and follow friends, celebrities, as well as other organizations. I've acquired some new followers... all people I know, and I've begun to follow more people. While Twitter is rapidly becoming more and more popular, I'm having a hard time getting really into it, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be using it if it weren't for this class. In my opinion, it seems excessive to have both Facebook and Twitter. I understand that they can be used in different ways, for different purposes, but I've found that Twitter doesn't do much for me that Facebook didn't already do. Other friends of mine really love using Twitter because they enjoy following their favorite celebrities, but I found that I'm personally not that interested in what Kim Kardashian is doing. I'd much rather follow people I actually know, and Facebook serves this purpose. This class has forced me to think about how social media and technology is integrated into my life on a daily basis. Because I receive Facebook and Twitter updates on my Blackberry, I feel like my phone is constantly going off, and because I have my phone on me at almost all times, it feels like I never get a break from social networking. Sometimes I just want to put my phone down and forget about Facebook and Twitter, but at the same time, it's hard not to look at updates when I get them. I will continue to tweet over the next several weeks, but I'm unsure of how much I will use my Twitter account once this project comes to an end.

  1. I totally agree with you Amanda. I'm on facebook but I do not use Twitter and I have no interest in joining. Many of my friends use Twitter, and whenever I hear about what they or other people tweet it always makes Twitter seem really pointless. However, facebook is pretty similar to Twitter and I go on it everyday so maybe I just need to learn a little more about Twitter. I would also get really irritated by getting constant notifications to my phone, and I don't receive facebook notifications sent to my phone for that reason. You make a good point about people being constantly connected to social networking, and it's clear how big of an impact websites such as Twitter and Facebook have had on our society.

  2. I just read this post about twitter and I feel very much the same way. A lot of my friends are frequent Twitter users and tell me that I should get one but I am like you and don't really care what celebrities are doing and what they are tweeting about. I am already on Facebook and able to follow my friends that way so I do not feel the need to be connected even more at even a faster rate. The one thing that I do hear about it that interests me is the quick news updates and information at rapid speeds that my friends seem to know sometimes hours before me. I guess it could be a good and quick news feed but right now it is unnecessary for me.
