In order to understand more of what tweens are doing on the Internet, I joined a virtual world called "Club Penguin." Before I could officially join this virtual world, I had to type in my "parents e-mail" so that they could be sent an activation code. I think this is a smart and safe way to join because it is more likely that the parents will know what their child is doing online. Club Penguin is a virtual world where kids have characters that are penguins. They can customize their character like you can in many other virtual worlds, and they can interact with other people online. Although there are more limits on what kids can do in this virtual world, it is very similar to what adults do when they join virtual worlds. There is this same idea of a community like in adult virtual worlds and kids seem to work together in order to accomplish tasks set before them. I believe this is a good learning experience for kids because it teaches them things that they may not learn otherwise.
Considering all of the virtual worlds and Social Networking Sites available to tweens nowadays, do you think that you will let your children join Social Networking Sites like Facebook or virtual worlds like Club Penguin?
