Twitter is an outstanding new tool; it connects millions and millions of people all across the globe with just 140 characters. In those limited characters, people can share pictures, links, stories, or just random occurrences of daily life. With this new tool, we are constantly finding new ways to use it and spread information via the internet.
While Twitter is a personal tool, it is also an extremely effective business tool. No business demonstrates this like athletics. Many professional and collegiate athletes currently use Twitter (athletetweets.com lists hundreds that use it) which has prompted different leagues and the NCAA to create legislation on Twitter (who would have ever thought that would be necessary?!?).
Social media has become a buzz word in the sports industry recently. Currently, if you are not using Facebook or Twitter to help promote athletics, you are clearly behind the times. Being a marketing intern here at the UW Athletic Department, I have a unique, “inside” view of Twitter use from a business standpoint. In my presentation, I will discuss the business side of Twitter usage by giving specific examples from the athletic department. I’ll also talk about how the marketing staff uses Twitter currently and where we would like to go in the future.
Some things to think about on my project are: do you currently use Twitter? Why? Do you follow athletes/businesses? Why? Do you follow uwbadgersdotcom (did you even know the athletic department had an official Twitter account)? Think about the Keen reading and Twitter: could Keen possibly have some good points when it comes to Twitter (I happen to think I could defend one or two of his points with regards to Twitter – it’d be a stretch, but possible)? Do you like the limitations of Twitter? Do you think any aspects of Twitter should be changed?
Enjoy the rest of Sunday!
