For my practicum project I was assigned social activist groups. After spending some time exploring the web and deciding what issue I wanted to focus on, I decided to settle on Breast Cancer Awareness groups. I specifically choose this topic because October is the national breast cancer awareness month and thought that it would be a hot topic to discuss and find information on, as well as a personal issue that is relevant in my life.
I decided to join the Advocacy Alliance based from Susan G. Komen for the Cure. On the website there are places for news, events, places to share stories, donation options and others. I found that this online community is welcoming to those diagnosed, those who know someone diagnosed, and those who just want to make a difference. The website is very welcoming to anyone with any background and gives the member as much opportunity to participate and explore as they want.
With the 2010 election around the corner, there is a "Breast Cancer Bill of Rights", for advocates to sign to show our leaders how important research and fighting of the disease is to so many people. It is composed of a list of right for individuals to gain more support financially and medically to treatment. Along with this there are other measures to gain attention and advocate the position of thousands of members.
