Practicum #2:

Hey everyone! Tomorrow I'm going to talk about how Twitter can be used in a personal/entertaining way... Some questions to think about beforehand are:

Do you use Twitter?

Does Twitter serve a purpose or is it all mindless and meaningless?

How has Twitter changed/redefined human interaction?

How do you think Twitter will evolve? Do you think Twitter could ever become more popular than facebook?

See you in discussion tomorrow!

  1. I have a twitter account that I started probably about 2 years ago. I signed up because a friend told me about it, and initially I only used it to talk to him and my roommates. Since then I have started following celebrities, news outlets, UW pages, and other things like that. It is interesting to compare what each person tweets about. Some are relevant news issues such as natural disasters, some are tour dates or tv show times where the person will appear, and some are just random things they are doing. It makes me feel like I'm actually friends with some of these celebrities (even though I know I'm not). But, they let people into their everyday personal lives, and I'm sure it makes other fans connected as well. I think in that aspect it surpasses facebook. I use facebook to connect with my "real" friends or people from class. I also see twitter as being more of a credible outlet than facebook, but that is just my perception.
You can follow me if you want! @abhahn

  2. I also have a Twitter and I really enjoy it. I've been using it since June of '09 when pretty much none of my friends had one, so back then I mostly used it to follow celebrities for when I was bored and needed an outlet. Now, I use it more often to communicate casually with my friends, read about what's happening in the world, the tabloids, etc etc. Overall, I think Twitter has its purposes but it's also meaningless at the same time. I agree with Allison in the fact that Twitter can bring news to many many people in a matter of seconds which serves a purpose, but its meaningless in the way that people can tweet something like "I'm going on a walk" which doesn't really do anything for the rest of the world. Follow me too! @MaddsAtMadison

Great job on your presentation btw! :)
