Computerized Interactions

I use Computerized Interactions for everything. I take notes on my computer, I watch TV on my computer and I do all my work on the computer. I also have a Droid so I find myself sucked into the world of the computer no matter where I am. Last night I watched many different episodes of Television, taking breaks only to check espn, the Bowl Selection show, and various other sports blogs. I gchatted and played games on my phone. With out the computer it is clear to me that my life would not be the same if it was not filled with all the tabs that I keep open.

I had to study the research by Professor Joanne Cantor for a class recently where she discusses CyberOverload. In it she recommends doing one thing at a time rather then task switching and to control distractions by only checking email and using the internet at planned times. I feel that I need to start listening to this because it has become increasingly harder to finish work when my life is constantly consumed by the computer.

  1. I definitely see what you're saying about Cyber Overload, but I wonder if in an era like the one we live in, is it even worth trying? We're rapidly approaching a point where every aspect of our lives is computerized to a degree. For many industries, it's far more cost effective to use the Internet to spread information rather than previously accepted media. My grandma complains that she can never find the movie times anymore because her local theater no longer prints their showtimes in the newspaper. With smartphones, it's hard to separate oneself from e-mail and other online sites, like Facebook, because updates are constantly reloading. I think it will be interesting to see what things are like in 5 or 10 years and if ideas like Cyber Overload are still so prominent, or if people have just resigned to the fact that computers are taking an increasingly prominent role in our lives.
