Practicum 6 - Mallory

3D Exploration on Second Life

I was searching for new places to go on Second Life's destination guide, and I found a new section of the guide called "3D Exploration". In this section, there were Second Life's versions of real life places such as the Eiffel Tower, New York City, and San Francisco. I decided to try out the Eiffel Tower and so my avatar was transported there at the click of the mouse. A welcome note appeared saying this was Paris from the early 1990's and that there were free old styled clothes for the avatar to use if they wanted to. I opted out on the clothing and decided to look around. I have never been to the Eiffel Tower and I have to say I was a bit disappointed in Second Life's portrayal of it. Maybe it was my computer, and maybe I don't have the newest version of Second Life. but the graphics weren't that good/realistic at all. I tried to fly my avatar upwards to see the whole Eiffel Tower, but the graphics stop halfway up the tower (looking like only half the tower was built). There were also hardly any other avatars around so there wasn't any interaction going on with this location. I may try a few of the other 3D Exploration sites another time, but for now, I rather find a place that says it is popular with lots of interaction and other avatars around.
