Practicum #6

As the semester winds down, I've been thinking of ways to look at Twitter that I haven't so far. Just this week I started following some major news sources on the social networking site, and have found that I find it to be very useful. I chose to follow CNN, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. I have always been pretty good about checking these sources for news and current events on a daily basis, however, having Twitter send updates about breaking news to my phone is pretty cool. With Twitter I can get the latest news headlines and links to the newest articles without having to take the time to look them up myself. Obviously, using Twitter filters out a lot of the content that is on the actual websites of these news organizations, but it is a good way to stay updated with breaking news. Now, when I get a 'tweet' about an article or a story that sounds interesting, I will go look it up, knowing that I can read about that particular topic on that source's website. Although I have only been using these services for about five or six days, I think they are a useful way to follow the news, and if enough people were to follow these types of sites and organizations on twitter, it could lead to a greater number of people being informed about national and world news.... and being informed is always a good thing!

  1. Let me be the first to admit that I rarely follow the news. I know it's shameful that I don't, but I can't seem to stay on top of it with keeping up to date with everything going on. With all of the new things that Twitter is bringing to the world, I think it's great that News sources have started to tweet. This is great for people like me who need quick tidbits throughout the day to stay focused! With this new addition to Twitter, you can even learn about things going on in the world from just the few characters that a tweet allows, which is great. Hopefully in the future I will begin to follow news tweets so I can be up to date with what's going on around me!

  2. Although I consider myself a generally avid news reader because I check news sites at least twice a day, I don't always have time to sit down with my computer. I just recently decided that I want to use Twitter more often, but I wasn't really sure how I wanted to use it because I really don't think that people care what I'm doing all day. However, I have started to follow different news sources. It is a very convenient way to find interesting and relevant stories just be getting a notification on my phone. Twitter has done a great job of making their site more than just an update on statuses and I think that it is a really great way to get the news out there.
