Since my last practicum post I asked my house brother from Mexico to share some of his favorite YouTube videos with me on Facebook. One of the videos he shared with me was called resbalon, which is actually a series of videos online. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJW4e3w4CY). I would explain these clips as something similar to the show Wipe Out that has aired on ABC or the show MXC which is frequently shown on Spike. Resbalon however is hosted in Spanish. For those of you who haven't seen one of these examples, all of the shows deal with showing an agility course where contestants try to jump/run from one object to the next while trying to avoid falling into the water below. These videos seem very popular among many different cultures especially since there exists the same idea communicated through three different languages.
In addition to talking to my house brother about his favorite YouTube videos, I found a website called MyGrito (http://mygrito.com) which claims that it is dedicated to microblogging with a Latino twist. I decided to join this site to see what it was all about after I read an article called MyGrito.com a Latino Online Community (http://juantornoe.blogs.com/hispanictrending/2007/04/mygritocom_a-la.html). The article said that the site was a bilingual community that lets you meet your friends' friends allowing you to build an online community while you learn who you are connected to through other people. The article also claimed that the site was dedicated to allowing people to build friendships. It stated that students could use this site to get together to form study groups, friends could chat amongst themselves, families can stay connected while mapping out their family trees, and business people and co-workers can network. In addition to these functions the article also argued that members can use this site to be a Matchmaker between friends or can search for singles. Knowing this makes me a bit concerned that mygrito is going to be similar to other social networking sites for Latino users where male users continually pursue females for dating purposes. For my last practicum post I plan on doing some more detailed about the site.
