Practicum 8 - Mallory

I decided to check out more places on Second Life's destination guide. I noticed the destination guide had a section called "Discussion" that I had never checked out before. I clicked on this, and found out there were different places for people to discuss various issues. There were hangouts for real life lawyers, law students, and legal scholars. These groups met monthly for meetings. There were communities for people interested in arts and sciences too. There were also places to discuss worldly issues, and a place to even "celebrate the diversity of authentic Native North American culture". "Philosophy Island" was a place to discuss philosophy. It's discription read, "exists to fosture culture debate, including the examination of ideas, theories, beliefs, and narratives that impact on many areas of life". I was very curious about these discussion areas and wanted to go in one right away. Unfortunately, I was not allowed in them because I do not have an adult status rating on Second Life. Apparently, there is a process to achieve an adult status rating on Second Life, such as by giving credit cared information, giving a whole bumch of personal information, etc. that I was not willing to do.

  1. It's interesting that they would restrict this section to just "adults." I could see possibly restricting certain discussion topics to just adults, but because I could see many people not wanting to give up such information, I would think there would be a more general discussion area. Sharing that information seems to be a big concern for many people online these days, which you would think second life would account for.
