Practicum #6-Sara

In a previous post, I mentioned that I wrote on some of the Facebook groups involving Justin Bieber. The question I asked on one of the fan pages was, "What is your favorite thing about Justin Bieber?" A boy responded and said, "Everything. HBU?" I was first surprised a boy answered because I'm so used to seeing the millions and millions of tween girls who follow Bieber's every move. A girl did "like" my comment though. To the boys comment, I responded, "I like his hair and his voice. Are you in his fan club?" I haven't gotten a response back yet, but I am trying to find out how many tweens are just fans on Facebook and how many actually pay money to join his club (even though I'm sure the parents are the ones who are paying for the club).

Speaking of parents, I have read quite a few articles on what parents allow their tweens to do on the Internet so I thought I would interview my mom to see what my sister and I were allowed to do on the Internet. My mom said that they always kept the computer in a main living area so that she could walk by anytime. As kids we knew that she could walk by at any moment, so this lessened the chance that we would go on a site we were not supposed to be on. She also checked the website history to make sure that we were not stumbling upon websites we should not have been on. She also put blocks on certain websites and there were restrictions on what kind of websites we could go to. Obviously as a tween, I was unaware of some of these things, but I think it is important for a parent to monitor what their child is doing on the Internet. I know there is always the issue of "you should trust your child," but sometimes it doesn't have anything to do with the trust issue. Some tweens are unaware of what they are getting themselves into and can put themselves in serious danger so I believe it is essential that parents put forth some effort in monitoring what their kids do on the Internet.
